THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH
Goatfell is a beacon to walkers on Arran. If you don't fancy the ascent from Brodick, which passes through the Brodick Castle estate on its way to the summit, a less vigorous way to enjoy the scenery is to take the low-level walk up Glen Rosa, just outside Broodick, which leads behind Goat Fell and into the interior of Arran. The scenery is quite fantastic, with a lovely stream running down the centre of the glen. This is actually an image that wouldn't have happened at all but for a lucky and rather synchronistic chance; I was on my way to Arran on the ferry from Ardrossan when I picked up a leaflet for a local Arran business. As I recall it was a perfumery, but what drew me was not their latest range of scents, but the photo they were using to illustrate the brochure. It showed this scene, with the burn tumbling down a low waterfall in the centre of the glen. Luckily the brochure mentioned the location of the scene in fine print. so I knew where I had to go to find this lovely view. A little research on my arrival led me to discover how to find the trail up the glen, and 'voila!', here is the result.
